Pros

I was looking forward to learning and understanding the MCD waiver program. The EMR system is mostly online, which was nice for documenting conversations, reportables, incidents, etc. from a non-clinical standpoint. I did believe initially that the corporate part of the company would be more invested in the community given that they manage most of their buildings, but do not own them. However, I did not receive a lot of support specific to my role, particularly given that our community was relatively new, COVID protocols were ramping up, and we were struggling to keep our footing with the great resignation. I think in my almost year and a half there, I only saw my boss face-to-face a total of 4 times.

Cons

I have worked in assisted living and senior care for 10+ years, and I found the residents here to be extremely volatile and entitled unlike anything I have ever seen. Average age was between 65-70, so a much younger population with expectations from both residents and families that were not realistic, whether that be 1:1 time with management, menu options, parking availability, or rent costs (the community was MCD waiver and total resident cost was >$1000). ISDH was on-site about once per month for about six months for various complaints. Residents were threatening to "riot" and "protest" over things such as menu choices, staffing (which was compliant with ISDH guidelines), and availability of management. I should also mention there were more than 100 residents. Correcting and creating processes was nearly impossible while trying to keep up with complaints/concerns of residents, staff, families, COVID guidance, staff turnover, and the day-to-day operations required of management staff. I was averaging around 50-55 hours per week on site and my DON was averaging 55-65 hours per week on site, not counting the amount of time spent working off site. Turnover amongst all staff caused staffing to also be quite time-consuming, considering the Administrator had to pinch-hit for hiring frequently d/t not only floor staff turnover, but management turnover as well. Manager turnover alone during my time there was 133%.
