Pros

Easy interviewing process. Starting salary is good. For the most part the job is low stress. Some of the old guys actually fall asleep at their desks, so you know you have plenty of job security. Will pay for you to get a security clearance that will help you get your next, better job, the following year. With so many people retiring, and the high engineering attrition rates of the last 4 years, there will be plenty of openings higher up soon.

Cons

Everything. There is a very negative company wide culture problem. Yearly raises are around 3% and do not keep up with the rate of new hire salaries rising. So after one or two years, new hires will make more than you. Career growth is also hard. Promotions can only be doled out regularly once time a year, in November. If you are just shy of a promotions, you need to wait an additional 12 months. Problems identified by employees take years to get resolved, if at all. Parking is not easy at most facilities unless you get in around 6am. Health insurance has seen noticable cuts since 2015. Grad program was mostly scrapped, and requires a long commitment to the company to truly benefit from. Pension was done away with before I started and current 401k is no different from any other companies. But worst of all, each individual department operates slightly differently than the others. This means rules are not implemented equally company wide.

Pros

This is a last resort job if you can’t find anything else

Cons

The processes and systems in place to get the job done is dismal. There is no official training for the job role. If you make suggestions and try to be helpful you are seen as a threat by management. There is rarely any cross functional communication. It feels like they want things to take a long time and be wrong so that they can charge the govt. more money. (Bc every task you do will have a charge number). Most long timers at the company don’t care about the work being done inefficiently either, bc they have a reason for overtime. Very weird corporate politics / favoritism. (I have never seen it as bad as it is here). Parking is terrible at every location.
