Occasionally, our work environment may not be a good match for an employee. We take our work seriously, and those staff that like to stay focused have done well here. Genetics Center has many people that have been with us for over 5, 10, 15, and even 20 years.
For everyday meal and other breaks, we have a generous break room with kitchen facilities, free coffee, large round tables, and plenty of chairs. Anybody using these facilities has a seat at a table.
We also have monthly lunchtime educational meetings in our conference room, where we provide free food (pizza or sandwiches, salads, drinks, and deserts) for the staff attending and presenting. Attendance at these popular meetings is completely voluntary. The conference room has a large table with chairs, but we also set up more chairs in the room so as many staff as possible can attend. The seating in the room fills up on a first come first serve basis for these casual gatherings. Our medical director and medical geneticist just use the additional chairs like others. The presenters, genetic counselors, and last to be seated may end up at the table seats, since the other chairs seem to always fill up first.
Besides the educational programs at those monthly meetings, we also celebrate the five-year anniversaries of our valued staff. Our staff are all on a name basis, as there are no employee numbers at Genetics Center. We genuinely care for and appreciate our team members.
We have dedicated staff in charge of our human resources (HR) functions. They are very well known to everyone, since they do the initial interviews and orientation. There are multiple senior staff members available that can be approached with any issues, so there are always several options if there are any employee concerns to address. As the “Experts in Genetics . . . Specialists in Caring,” we do truly care for our employees.
