Pros

- Fair hours, sick days, and vacation days ESPECIALLY in comparison to private academies - They seem to pay attention to an applicant's preferences as much as possible (being near a city, living close to your school) - Free housing and low living costs - Always paid on time - Coordinators and staff members really try to help new teachers adjust to the country

Cons

- Overall experience really depends on the school and/or the English co-teachers - It can be hard to get in touch with GEPIK coordinators in the event of an immediate problem - Positions are unstable with schools losing funding & adding more restrictions with each passing year (schools blocking GMail, switching from Microsoft programs to only Korean ones)

Pros

Free housing If you are American full refund of pension Free flight to and from Korea and a free flight home with each contract renewal (this may have changed with the budget cuts) Co-teachers can be a plus depending on the teacher- I created Team Teaching Procedures to make class time more effective Much better opportunity to learn about Korean culture and society compared to working at a hagwon Great opportunity to become friends with Korean teachers. Higher compensation than EPIK Closer to Seoul than EPIK

Cons

GEPIK trainings were not as beneficial as EPIK trainings (lower quality of presenters and topics weren't as helpful/innovative). My recruiters knew this and therefore my first training in Korea was from EPIK in my first week in Korea. Where as GEPIK trains you after you have already started teaching for a couple months, which makes no sense to me. GEPIK is understaffed and isn't as helpful to help teachers in case of difficult situations. I was advised to do everything the "Korean way" Your job isn't stable; Budget cuts are a realistic and unexpected occurrence.
