Pros
I just completed a summer teaching internship with GirlForward, and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had. GirlForward's mission to help refugee girls become respected and active members of their community is beautiful. I didn't know what to expect out of this internship, and I have to say my expectations were exceeded in every way. I'm so glad to have had this opportunity! My coworkers and supervisor were incredibly friendly, motivated, and supportive. Working with the campers themselves was such a blast too - they were hilarious, smart, and so engaged in the daily activities and programs we led with them.
Our supervisor was with us every step of the way, and after training us on how to lead camp, allowed us autonomy to work with the girls and build positive relationships with them and each other. I couldn't have asked for a better team to work with everyday for a month! If any of us ever felt overwhelmed, we were always given support and room to voice our concerns (which were very few).
Camp was such an enriching experience and its ending was bittersweet. I will be continuing my involvement with the organization because I loved it so much. I truly felt like I made a difference in the girls' lives and they certainly made a difference in mine. I hope anyone who comes across GirlForward loves it as much as I do.
Cons
Unpaid position but totally worth my time!!
