Pros
Great for extra cash, pay on time. Employee support improved from 2017-2019. Bonus for good student reviews, being on time and reliable. Newly created facebook page helped teachers connect. Paid for TESOL certificate. Lot of seminars to help teachers connect and learn from more experienced teachers.
Cons
The bonuses were great in 2017. I started off $18.00 per hour group class of 4. Base pay Canadian was $1,059.00 after conversion. After 500 classes I was promoted to Master Teacher at $19.00 per hour, with my bonus I was making appx. $1,500 CAD per month. After 500 classes I became a master teacher and received $19.00 per hour plus my bonuses. They changed things in 2019 all master teachers were demoted and were set back to $18.00 and hour. All teachers made $18.00 regardless if they were there 1 week or 3 years. So I automatically lost $50.00 a month. The bonuses were now based on teachers performance, raging from 0-20% if the person hired to assess your class liked you or not. Even at 20% the most I would get was $23.00 per class and that was if I stayed at the 20%. The bonus system became so confusing, no one new how much they were getting from month to month. If you messed up one class you lost your bonus for the month. So many teachers were losing hundreds of dollars on this new system and pretty upset. The one student classes were up to $24.00 a class for 25 minutes. Now they were reset back to $7.00 per class. When you voiced your opinion on their facebook page, they would censor your comments. So I left the page. Since I live in B.C I was working from 2am-5:45 am and after 2 1/2 years I burnt out; which is one of the job hazards of working ESL. I would recommend HAWO to anyone just starting ESL online. I started when it was 51talk and there were a lot of improvements since then. But the demotion was an insult to all master teachers, and the bonus system was garbage. That was in 2019 maybe they got too many complaints and changed it or people started to love the changes. I don't know.
