Pros

Always plenty of overtime available (due to constant staff turnover)

Cons

Pay barely above minimum wage, long shifts, compulsory overtime, shifts changed with as little as 24 hours notice, aggressive interrogation if you dare to be too ill to work, incompetent management who shift blame onto their subordinates, more red tape than you would ever believe possible (there is literally a form for everything - one for replacing jugs of water / juice, one for cleaning something, and for the lucky senior care staff, a form to confirm all the other forms have been signed!) resulting in more time spent pen pushing than actually caring for the residents, constantly short staffed due to high turnover of staff (the endless cycle of doom), formal investigation / disciplinary action taken for the most minor of oversights (e.g. forgetting to sign one of the aforementioned forms), no performance related bonuses (only a 'Kindness in Care' award for great performance, which means having your photo displayed in a nice little frame for a while), condescending and sarcastic management style that involves berating you in front of your colleagues and making you feel like you're at school again... I could go on forever, but if you're still insane enough to consider working for HC One after reading all of the above, the best of luck to you and don't forget to hand in your uniform when you inevitably leave.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your thoughts with us, and I am really sorry to learn that you are not enjoying your experience working with us. We are determined to provide quality care at every home and our dedicated and hardworking colleagues are the most important part of making that happen. Most of the feedback we’ve received from colleagues has been really positive. For example, 85% of nearly 5,000 home-based colleagues who took part in the most recent annual survey said they were ‘satisfied or very satisfied’ with their jobs and working at HC-One. However, it is also really important for us to learn from people like you and the feedback you’ve given us. I can let you know that we regularly review staff levels at each home to make sure we’re providing appropriate care for Residents. We are also working with the GMB Union to make sure that every colleague will earn above the national minimum wage. I know you’ve expressed frustration with red tape, but it’s also really important that we can demonstrate care provision that meets each Resident’s specific needs. I’m really sorry to hear your concerns about management. We’re introducing some new training and support programmes for some managers to help create good working relationships with staff teams and we never accept negative behaviour towards colleagues. If you are not comfortable speaking to your manager, please do get in touch with the regional HR or Operations Team, or you can go straight to the Chairman via askchai@hc-one.co.uk. Anything you say will be treated in total confidence. I do hope you will get in touch with us so that we can learn more about your specific experiences and work to address them. Alison

Pros

Great PTO! Good place to get experience as a new graduate.

Cons

Poor work /life balance due to lots of uncompensated hours required to maintain productivity. Double booking of clients by schedulers with no say so. pr rather than primary focus of agency is on productivity. Also, Electronic Health Record becomes a crutch (too many check boxes) and you will lose your diagnostic skills and writing skills here. Also, supervision is not free here.
