Pros
If you have the support, you can learn a lot but that’s few and far between.
Cons
Where to begin. The nurse Extern position is just a PCT position. The only time you are lucky enough to learn anything or do anything related to the “job description” is if a nurse is nice enough to want to teach you. In the two years I was there, I only had two nurses that let me do anything nursing related. The culture is negative. Forget raises. I got 10 cents after 90 days and never saw another raise again even though I had “above average” on my performance reviews. We were lied to about disaster pay during Hurricane Ian. I took their EKG class to pick up extra shifts and ended up working that position constantly because they had no staff. In the end that was a benefit for me as it got me away from the horrible management of the floor I was on. Oh, and when I received me last W-2, they had charged me for benefits I never received and was told I didn’t qualify for. If you clocked out before a certain time at the end of your shift, you were docked 15 minutes off your paid. I could go on forever with all the mess they put me through.
