Toxic office atmosphere, save yourself the mental health - Assistant Professor Hansei University Employee Review

Pros

Management is somewhat hands-off, although the trend is moving toward more standardized curriculum and tests. Twelve teaching hours a week. Two free meals on weekdays. Standard Korean cafeteria type food. Pretty good vacation time: one mandatory camp per year, which could be as short as one week, so up to 15 weeks of vacation a year. About 12 weeks minimum.

Cons

Terrible atmosphere in the office, although you might not notice it for a few weeks, because it's not overt. There is an ongoing and apparently quite severe feud between several of the long-time foreign professors. Rather than hash it out in the open, it's more of a passive-aggressive war of attrition. Most of the people in the office try to stay neutral and be nice, but if you're nice to the wrong person, you can expect retaliation, such as being snubbed, given dirty looks, gossiped about, or most notably, receiving subtle verbal provocations in an attempt to "out" you as being on the enemy team. As a result, everyone is careful to avoid being too nice to anyone else. You'll have 5 mandatory hours per week in the office, which is one large-ish room shared by all the foreign professors. No raises.

Pros

The school is overall supportive of the English program; fellow faculty and chair do what they can to help initiatives developed among foreign faculty. Generous vacation time and usually a 4-day workweek.

Cons

Last-minute curriculum changes and sometimes random directives handed down from administration with little reasoning, as happens at many Korean schools. School is run by a Christian church with a dubious reputation, but that never really affects classroom teaching.
