Management/work culture is petty, sexist, inhumane - Sales Associate Hardware Sales Employee Review

Pros

Discount was nice to have access to.

Cons

When I worked there, everyone was required to work full-time. Quality of life was terrible because of the fact that the store is closed on Sundays. This meant that having two days in a row off was only available to people with the most seniority while the rest of staff had to deal with always having scattered time off. Women are disproportionately placed in cashiering positions with little opportunity to move onto the sales floor. The owners are completely despicable and really treat you like a number rather than a human being. Hardware Sales puts up a front of being a family-oriented business just because it is family-owned and goes far back in Bellingham history, but unfortunately, this is 100% a façade. At the time, I was a student at WWU. They initially made an exception to the full-time rule for me, and let me work 25-30 hours during the school year, and full-time in the summer. I did this for a year before one day, they let me go with no notice. It was a same-day termination with no severance package. I was clearly told that it was a numbers thing and not an issue with my job performance. Any decent employer should give more notice than the same afternoon. I think this clearly demonstrates the lack of humanity practiced at Hardware Sales. It’s just a bunch of bull-headed men with little organizational skills and/or empathy. Do yourself a favor and pass on this.

Pros

Great staff and a very encouraging environment devoted to helping with career growth.

Cons

The only thing that is wrong with this company is that it is closed on Sundays.

Pros

Family like atmosphere. Tight knit group. They care about their employees. They threw me a baby shower with all my fellow cashier girls, it was extremely thoughtful and I got great gifts. Shifts are decent, they close at 5:30. And there are many knowledgeable people to help newbies and customers.

Cons

Breaks are literally 10 minutes, which is really only about 7 once u get to where ever you are taking break, and lunch is 30 minutes, not a minute longer. They aren't very lenient on sick days or calling in. You will get fired if you have too many and I think 3 is the max. Very hard to schedule a day off.
