Pros
Winery is in a great location and gets some of the most foot traffic in the valley. Employees at the time were all great people. Vineyard is all on an eastern slope, but has the potential to make excellent wines.
Cons
Inventory is fairly back vintaged with faulted wines. The cellar layout is tight but workable. The majority of the equipment was non-operational, limping along or absent. A lot of blame was placed on the previous winemaker, but it didn't take long to recognize the main thing dragging this winery down is its leadership. The owner only comes around once a month, but causes major damage to morale and workflow when present. No accountability and highly self-centered with a poor understanding of winemaking operations. Directions for supervising the vineyard crew were in a manner that was discriminatory towards race and there is retaliation if you push back. Employees and the GM are frequently belittled and undermined. Staff are put in an awkward family dynamic and demotivating workspace. Work orders, expectations and processes are a constantly moving target and poorly communicated. Expect requests to backfire. High turnover rate at both the CA and OR wineries. Suspicious overdue payment calls from suppliers/service providers despite having sent invoices to the accounting department in CA suggests financial trouble and/or poor money management. I would recommend caution and interview thoroughly before you risk accepting a position at this company.
