Cons

As an expat, I strongly advise caution before accepting a job at Hirslanden, My experience has been frustrating, and there are several serious issues that international candidates should be aware of before relocating. 1. Outdated Facilities & Backward Practices Despite Hirslanden being a private hospital group, the facilities—at least in my department—are extremely outdated. Equipment is old, and the overall infrastructure does not reflect modern, high-quality private healthcare. If you're coming from a country with advanced hospital setups, you may be shocked at how far behind things are. 2. Lack of Competence & Scientific Progress The local culture does not prioritize continuous education or professional development. Many colleagues lack scientific curiosity and resist change or innovation. If you thrive in dynamic, research-driven environments, you will likely find yourself frustrated here. There is no push for improvement, and mediocrity is widely accepted. 3. Unclear Job Descriptions & Disrespectful Tasks The job descriptions at Hirslanden are not always clear, and responsibilities are poorly defined. I have been asked to do tasks that have nothing to do with my role—such as administrative work that should be handled by a secretary or even cleaning-related tasks. I did not earn multiple degrees to take on these responsibilities, and it is disgraceful that highly trained professionals are expected to do work far outside their expertise. 4. Outdated Workflows & Zero Automation Hirslanden’s processes are painfully slow and outdated. Nothing is automated, and they still rely heavily on paper and printing. If you are someone who values efficiency, technology, and environmentally friendly practices, you will find this place incredibly frustrating. Simple tasks that should be digitized still require unnecessary paperwork, leading to time-wasting inefficiencies across the entire hospital. 5. Misleading HR & False Promises About Bonuses HR misleads candidates about the Short-Term Incentive (STI) Programme. They present it as a performance-based bonus tied to your salary. This is false. The bonus depends on the financial performance of the entire Hirslanden Group, which is consistently poor, meaning the actual payout is either heavily reduced or non-existent. Your personal performance has no real impact on the bonus, making it completely unreliable. If you're counting on bonuses as part of your salary package, do not trust what HR tells you. 6. Expats, Be Extremely Careful Switzerland is already an expensive country, and Hirslanden does not provide adequate support for expats. The work culture is not particularly welcoming to foreigners, and if you don’t speak fluent German, expect additional barriers. Do not expect the kind of professional integration or respect you may have experienced in other international healthcare environments. Final Verdict: Hirslanden is not a good choice for ambitious professionals looking for a rewarding career, particularly expats. The outdated infrastructure, lack of automation, low professional standards, misleading HR, and disrespectful job expectations make it a poor workplace. If you are looking for a scientifically driven, efficient, and progressive hospital environment, look elsewhere. Would I recommend this job to another expat? Absolutely not.
