Pros
Great work. Most of their housing programs really do provide their clients with the resources to lift themselves out of homelessness/poverty. A lot of amazing people on the Program Staff, Communications and Development teams. It is admirable how motivated they seem to be about the cause they are fighting for.
Cons
The CEO is a former board member, and there have been other board members hired to fill senior level positions that they're not qualified for. They don't want to do the legwork in the hiring process to find good people. The board in general takes a pretty laissez-faire approach to things; on several occasions program staff has had to explain basic concepts of programs during board meetings. It is my perception that board members consider this work a pet-project, and do not have a grasp on the intricacies of this work. This includes the CEO, who spent his career as a lawyer. He has had a huge wake-up call to the very hard work his position requires. Think Donald Trump when he realized how hard being US President was. A wealthy, privileged Caucasian male that is mostly clueless about racial inequality has no business running an organization that advocates for the Housing First Initiative, which serves some of the most disenfranchised populations in our nation's capital.
