Pros

Got to work with and meet some really nice people. Free seltzer. Lighting products are nice. Got some laughs out of this whole ridiculous experience.

Cons

There aren't a ton of 'corporate' job opportunities in the area, otherwise the turnover would be insane, for the following reasons: Most people seem to be hourly here, for jobs that would be full-time salaried positions elsewhere - BIG red flag. The wages are barely enough to survive off of. I worked evenings and weekends to make ends meet while working a full time job here. This place loves rules for virtually everything. If they spent as much energy focusing on how they are running their business as they do enforcing petty rules on their employees and treating them like children, they'd be going gangbusters. You can't eat at your desk, even innocuous snacks. You get a 30 min lunch break which turns into 15 mins if you god forbid you have to use the microwave. You are watched like a hawk. For instance, I was told I was snacking too much and put on a performance warning. The company rounds your time up/down on your time card so if you work a true 40hr week it could wind up reflecting as less if you so much as trip on the stairs on your way to your desk one day and it costs you a minute or two of clocking in. People would come into work with COVID or the flu because of how stingy the sick day policy is. You get no vacation time. Like 5 days accrued after working there for one whole year. We had to come in the day after Xmas despite there being nothing to do, just 'because'. Account management = 1000% customer service and honestly most of the role should and could be automated by AI. There is no PM software or anything so you are just managing an out of control inbox, processing returns, orders, complaints. We were told there would be commission opportunities for the role, there was not. They offer $5 for every lighting product upsold, which sadly became a running joke on the team. There is NO incentive monetary or otherwise to do well. There are NO KPI's whatsoever (I don't think management even knows what those are). Some coworkers of mine received a raise one year into working here - of $1/hr!!!!! You are honestly better off working at Stewarts.

Pros

Beautiful office, nice product, some great colleagues

Cons

Working here is a lesson in how bad leadership can stifle a great brand. HVLG builds beautiful product, but behind the scenes, it is chaotic and demoralizing. Strategy changes on a whim, communication is non-existent, and the "culture" is essentially just obedience. I’ve seen departments operate on fumes because leadership refuses to invest in long-term strategy, opting instead to either offshore roles to save money or conveniently "restructure" the department only to quietly post those same jobs months later. It’s quite sad, actually. with even a sliver of competent, humble leadership, this company could be rivaling Visual Comfort at every turn. Instead, they’ve built an echo chamber where ego outranks competence. If you are willing to nod along and ignore the dysfunction, you'll have a long career here. If you value upward mobility, mentorship and safety, maybe look at one of their competitors.
