Pros
Opportunity to work in different projects and gain experience
Cons
Being the public service agency, people at the management are just winging through. Very unfair work share especially to those early career scientists. Those who are working hard are given extremely heavy workload, while those not working seem to get away with everything. Some of the management level people are just there to boss around and spend the whole day on useless management meetings. Most of the tasks with deadlines are assigned to computational staff and higher level management seems to turn blind eyes towards unfair work practice. Because the centre practices the hybrid culture of both academia and industry, the senior management does not care about anything except bringing money to the centre. After the grants are received, scientists are hired to finish the task. In some ways, early career scientists are treated as disposable items. The core scientists are stretched very thin that is why staff retention is extremely low for early career ones. The centre struggles to retain talented staff and lazy ones are rewarded since the public service pay scale is based on length of the service.
