Pros

I worked at IOPO for nearly ten years. In that time, I worked with some of the most compassionate and caring people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. IOPO used to be a business that believed in donation as well as in providing a work environment that was happy, productive and dynamic for those in the organization. I was so proud to work for IOPO.

Cons

In the last few years the mission has slowly eroded, along with the moral of the staff. It became more important to make money at all cost. The favorite saying of leadership was " you are replaceable". Leadership was aggressive, intimidating and abusive. You were always scared of losing your job. All the really good people have left or been fired. I worked with people who regularly took amphetamines and other things in order to stay awake to get the job done (you were expected to stay awake for upwards of 72 hours). If we were unable to get cases completed, IOPO would rather lose the donor than give it to another tissue bank to ensure donation occurred. I now work for another OPO and couldn't be happier. The disfunction of IOPO has become even more glaring now that I work for an organization that does more than just give lip service to the mission of donation. There is an undercurrent of racism that is also prevalent. I can honestly not believe this company is still in business! People have been promoted who were involved in illegal behavior and were actively being investigated by authorities. IOPO was aware of this and didn't care. It is really sad. They lie to donor families about the donation process and will say anything to get a family to consent. It is totally unethical. I made the choice to leave IOPO because I could no longer stand by and work for a place that was so cut throat and deceptive to donor families. It used to be such a wonderful place to work. No wonder they can't ever win "Best Places to Work" anymore.
