Pros

- possibility of free training within the Inserm continuous education schemes - a lot of benefits are payed by default in France (no possibility to opt out) - often the congresses are payed for - plenty of vacations which are compulsory to take, otherwise you will loose everything by the end of the contract (and you are not payed more for the vacation you did not take)

Cons

- as a post-doc one is not allowed to have official responsibilities, and has virtually no word to say in any official research project - the public system has pre-fixed salary levels that cannot be negotiated - if you work more you would never ever be payed more in France - there is usually very little interaction between research groups

Pros

Public french institute good for discovery research and fundamental sciences on many scientific subjects. Lots of students are interns there so they can learn and practice scientific techniques.

Cons

As every public french institute, it is really difficult to have a permanent contract there. They don't have as much as private companies so they can be limited in their equipment.
