Institute for In Vitro Sciences

Is this your company?

Great starting point for those who have their BS degree, but don't stay longer than 2 years. - Biologist Institute for In Vitro Sciences Employee Review

Pros

Co-workers are decent. Flexible schedule, time-off requests are never turned down. Bagels on Fridays.

Cons

The company is nonprofit so the salary is lower than similar jobs in the area. They've grown very quickly the past few years, so they're experiencing growing pains: Biologists are packed into an office like sardines, there is absolutely no privacy; management is extremely ineffective (scheduling of duties is unfair; hired too many new people so now work is spread very thinly or they'll task you to do remedial job assignments; having a hard time with employee morale, etc.), basically they are creating an environment no one wants to be a part of. In addition, upper level management and Study Directors are disconnected from the lab and have no clue about the technical aspects of the job, yet you are not allowed to voice an opinion or make simple judgement calls. Promotions are only in title, unless you get on the 'favorites' list you still have the same job functions regardless of how long you've been there.

Pros

Good people when it came to being social. Often free food. In the winter time, there was a long break where everyone was off. Good training if you're a beginner in the lab. They teach everyone that is employed proper technique.

Cons

They ran a lot of people ragged with the amount of work that was given to them and the pay, due to the company being a non profit, was significantly lower than most private companies. Many people worked overtime and often the overtime was seen as bad due to the fact that the company had to pay more. Many things in the assays have points where timing is critical and it can be quite difficult to stay on the time point. If something happens that's clearly an issue with the substance being tested and not your skill, your skill will still be judged. Sometimes there will be a significant change in the procedure and if you do not get it perfect the first time, you will be judged by the upper management. I found it to be a place where they wanted good workers but did not pay for good workers. It appears that people seemed to only stay because they did not know their actual worth. I also found it a bit strange but a lot of staff were women. There would be moments where there was a bit of discriminatory talk about men.
