Pros

In my recruitment process Intact wasn't putting a lot of emphasize on advertising their company culture but after a year at Intact and as someone who has spend a good deal of time digging into positive psychology I would actually say that this is what sets them apart from all of the companies I have worked with so far and having worked quiet a while in onside consulting I actually can say that I have experienced a lot of different company cultures. What in my opinion sets Intact apart is that they don't just talk a lot about employee engagement, goodies or a ping pong table they installed but rather you can feel that the values are lived in every decision. Just to give a few examples: - I have worked on few projects already and had contacts with a lot of people in the Datalab but I have yet to meet a single manager which I didn't found generally kind and helpful. While other's promote blender and a**holes they seem to have found a very nice system of not only looking at your work or self-presentation skills but also how you involve yourself in the lab and how you contribute in other forms to the team - while at other companies talking about promotions often seemed like a battle/gamble between me and my boss at Intact it seems more like my boss is on my side and tries with me to build a good case for justifying a raise/promotion - I was used to having performance conversations once or twice a year and now I see my boss every second week to have continuous conversations about the project and my development which really gives you the time to get to know each other and have more targeted conversations - I love that if you want to get involved more than Intact is super open for any initiatives and so some of my colleagues are heavily involved in the onboarding of new hires, other help out with recruitment events, others do the interviews with interns and again others organize internal learning events or data challenges - I like how human it is so for example I have been called up a few times over the last year from one of the VP’s to individually check in with us how we are dealing with the pandemic and work from home situation and we also got several extra free days because it was recognized that working from home often blurs the line between work/free time more and that the pandemic is a especially challenging situation - I like the trust which is put in me so that for example we have one flex day a month if we feel like we have been working more than our normal hours which we can just take without any questions asked and just generally I am trusted by my manager to take decisions inside the project for myself - one of the values of the company is also that we want to be there for our clients in hard times and I feel like we really came through for our clients in this pandemic by being one of the first insurances starting help programs for our clients and paying parts of their premiums back which made me personally very proud of being part of Intact - also in terms of data maturity and competency I have to say that Intact is very advanced in comparison to most companies I have seen (might be a consulting bias) and I think it stems from the fact that on every level in the lab people are either Data Scientist/Data Engineers themselves or are acturaries and therefore very good with at least the statistical side of things which enabled me to have a lot more in depth discussions about models with my boss than ever before I could go on for quite a while but I think the main point is that values are very important at Intact, there is a variety of super interesting challenges and the people are great so I would full-heartedly recommend the DataLab as a workplace for anyone working in Data Science.

Cons

There is some friction when I comes to working with teams outside of the DataLab as they are not as agile where definitely some improvements could be made even though I find it is still in a range which is acceptable for a company of the size of Intact as I have worked for small companies struggeling more with the coordination between different departements and inside of the DataLab the processes are actually quite quick. The second point I personally would have liked better is having a bid more stability in terms of projects. I have been on the third project in one year and initally I was actually hoping by switching out of the consulting world to stay longer on individual projects. I have been assured from all sides that this is just extraordinary bad luck and mainly caused by Intact having bought another company which shifted priorities a bit and I know from the stories from my colleagues that their project history has been a lot more stable and with them having a lot more influence on the switches, but obviously on a personal level that was a bit of negative point.
