Pros

Provides Affordable Housing to communities and individuals who need it. Their REFUSAL to compensate employees for responsibilities resulted in my termination from the company which was the BIGGEST PRO because I am truly happy & enjoy going to work EVERYDAY! My new Manager isn't MISERABLE AND DOESNT SAP my Joy!!! Thank you Interstate !

Cons

Pay to Workload Ratio are NOT equivalent. I was hired as Pt assistant, scheduled at 15 hours a week initially. The site only had 4 employees, 2 of whom were FT (Site Manager/Maintenance Supervisor) & 2 Pt (Front Office Assistant/Maintenance Technician) AND they knew the site was in dire NEED of ADDITIONAL Staff including: another maintenance technician OR upgrade the pt Tech to Ft. They refused AND instead work who they have to the point of breaking. My job was to ASSIST the site manager however they NEEDED a Assistant Manager & Additional office worker BUT again refused. DEMANDED and subsequently kept adding responsibilities to MY "job description" without asking me first. The Human Resources Department is PRO COMPANY NOT EMPLOYEE which happens EVERYWHERE BUT they wouldnt even assist in areas for employees they should have like whistle blowing, concerns, etc. THEY CONTINUED to be Pro EMPLOYER. Before I left I was Assistant Manager, Office Assistant, and Secretary KEPT at 30 hours JUST UNDER FT so I received NO benefits AND KEPT me at the pt hourly office assistant wage. I was denied more hours & a raise to commensurate with the work I WAS DOING! The fact the responsibility fell to me was an indication they were FULLY aware the positions were NEEDED and even admitted they were after I spoke to them regarding it. I received NO Benefits, NO holiday pay, None of the benefits afforded the procrastinating Site manager who only worked 5 hours MORE a week than me. After 4 years I had enough and spoke with them regarding my current responsibilities laying them out in a clear and concise manner, asking for AGAIN the pay and benefits to REFLECT the responsibilities I DID not ask for BUT was given & THEY DECLINED! NEVER RECEIVED A WRITE UP/& ALWAYS GOT MY MEASLY RAISE YET they wanted to CONTINUE to pay me CONSIDERABLY LESS than what they would HAVE to pay someone hired as Asst. Manager. They pushed , so I pushed back & they terminated me for it! I received my unemployment because it was a load of BS, even the Dept. labor concluded so. It ended up being BEST thing behind being a parent that ever happened to me BECAUSE NOW I am in a position I LOVE, WITH CO WORKERS I LOVE sitting in an office working LESS hours MAKING a CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT MORE !!!

Pros

I have had the pleasure of working in multiple regions so I am well aware that the cons do not exist throughout the entire company. Great opportunity to gain housing and state certifications at the expense of the company. The company promotes from within. Depending on the office, there is flexibility to be able to handle personal business, such as the extensive list of tasks you have to complete to get the insurance discount. You can also walk away with some lifetime friends, I did with the first group of individuals I worked with/for. Got along great with the RPM and VP. The yearly conferences are always fun and informative, if your site budgets for it.

Cons

Pay to workload ratio is horrible. Insurance premiums are very high (the premium can be lowered if you have time to take off and get certain exams done). Progression in the company and how you are treated can be based off of who you know. There have been some changes and a few of the Regional Property Managers do not know the job well enough to train or supervise the Property Managers. It can cause you not to be motivated because you know you are not doing your job correctly because you were never taught how to. Some VPs do not take the time to know the Property Managers so when things are really bad, it is easy for the RPM that they have built a relationship to place blame on you.
