The security of government work is nice, and the benefits are good for this area.

The leadership and structure are designed to keep the status quo and make middle management feel like they are walking on eggshells, and the "training" for leadership, employees, and basic systems of operation is mediocre or non-existent. The trickle-down effect on line staff is real, and the employees who join the organization to make a difference are often left feeling undervalued, unappreciated, and with little creative freedom to make any real impact. It is a demoralizing place to work. That is, unless you are lucky enough to get a solid manager, but even they end up falling prey to the overall system and executive leadership.
