Pros
I live in Maine and drove far as the Georgia state line and back to Maine with about 7 or 8 stops for the week. I really enjoyed this account. In truth I wish I hadn’t left. I got a local job in Maine with a different company, but enjoyed my time working on this GP account. One of the best driving jobs I’ve had. I was out for 5.5 days and never home more than 34 hours. Maybe 36 but rarely 48 hours. Trucks are mostly Internationals for this account. In my 1.5 years on this account. I had four times I had to go to the shop for break down repairs or get a different truck due to extended repairs and two times the truck was towed to a shop. I parked for the night at the drop locations or found a place close by to the drop locations. Never really had to worry too much about finding a place to park for the night. Most places were pretty easy to back into. Most places had you loaded within 1.5 to 2 hours. When it comes to trailers it’s 50/50 some are brand new, others are on the edge of being considered for the junk yard. Once in a while you’ll have to change a tail light, or fix the airlines that hang under the trailer, but overall, the trailers get a grade of B overall. They use People-net for electronic logs which are slow, most trucks have a keyboard so that makes it nice. If the keyboard doesn’t work, just shut the truck down with the switch beside the seat and it will reset. JB is always sending safety messages, very safety conscious company. These E-logs have all your macro’s and GPS. I would also recommend getting a Rand McNally GPS, because it tells you were all the Cat Scales, Weigh Stations and Truck stops are along your route. Trucks are equipped with the Bindex System, basically it’s a laser on the front of truck that monitors your following distance. The beeping sound will drive you nuts if you don’t keep a good following distance. Also, expect to get a collision mitigation event at least every 3 months. What that means is - you almost hit something even though nothing was even near you. Sometimes it goes off for no reason at all. You DM will call you asking what happened and sometimes it just something dumb like a box truck that was parked on the side of the road that it went off on. Also, had a few times that it applied the brakes and you know it when it does it, it always ticked me off when that happened for no reason. Feels like a quick jolt. Was always concerned and hoped it never did that on black ice, Very rare this happens (the brakes being applied, the jolt). They do pay for cat scales. You pay for it and they reimburse you. You take the truck home with you. They allow you to go over your logs by mistake four times per month, after that imagine you’ll be speaking with someone. Trucks have inverters and bunk heaters. I believe pets are allowed. I would say it’s 50/50 when it comes to pre-loads and live loads. Always had pre-plans, sometimes out several days, nice knowing where you’re going that far out. Rarely ever changed. It’s all dedicated, mosty , may go to a different place once per week. It is no touch freight. Pre-pass allows you to by-pass some weigh stations. It’s about 50/50 when it comes to heavy loads and light loads. Maybe once or twice a week I would go to a Cat Scale, other than that, mostly all lighter loads. Transflo is used for your paperwork, scan your paper work at any truck stop. Fuel at any Pilot, TA or Loves. Health insurance is really inexpensive compared to other carriers. I averaged $950.00 per week or $47,000 per year. When I had a bad tire they were quick to have someone come out and repair it. However, maintenance will fight you on trying to get you to take it to a shop. Just tell them no it’s not safe and they will send someone out. I stayed going none stop most of the time. You will probably have one day per week were you sit for a long period of time, but other than that, you’re running none stop. Overall, great company. Would give them a B+ in the end.
Cons
Weekends at home only happen if you leave on a Monday morning and drive hard all week to get back home on Saturday by 3PM. Weekends are not promised on this account. Getting a hold of a DM at night is more difficult compared to the day, sometimes you’ve got to call over and over to get a hold of someone. Had to fight for detention sometimes. 5% of your miles are not paid, due to hub miles. Basically if you drive 500 miles expect to be paid for 475 miles. Dispatchers are all about numbers and nothing more. Don’t even bother trying to have a rapport with your DM. They could care less. It’s just about work flow and not people so much.
