Pros
If serving others is your passion, a community action agency is a good place for you. They like to promote from within which can be good or bad depending on the situation.
Cons
Very negative, fearful culture. This is an agency where who you know is much more important than what you know. Very unengaged, rubber stamp type of Board of Directors who have been sued regularly over maladaptive employee relations - the agency loses quite often in this lawsuits. Top down, hierarchical type leadership. No transparency. Staff of one their programs voted the union in to protect themselves from their particular director. Director is still there, revolving door for the staff. Over 50% of the employees are so poorly paid that they qualify for the programs the agency offers! It is a given that no one works at a nonprofit to get rich, however, it would be nice if salaries were at least commensurate with experience.
