Pros

The size of the college makes it easier to get to know a fair number of students and colleagues well. The standards and expectations are high, and it keeps you at your best. The students are bright and heavily involved in campus organizations. The co-curricular life provides excellent opportunities for skill development in leadership, teamwork, creativity, planning, and even some marketing and financial elements. The small classes foster academic responsibility, intellectual development, strong research and writing skills, critical thinking and analysis. It encourages excellence in an environment of friendly competition. Summer science research programs provide opportunities for additional experience that many wouldn't otherwise have until a graduate-level program. There seems to be a general culture among students of 'wanting to make a positive difference' -- not just making money -- upon graduating (though many creatively achieve both in their careers). The alumni/ae of Kenyon have been wonderfully supportive of students with career exploration and networking, both through faculty and the career office.

Cons

Along with its wonderful location can come a sense of internal self-sufficiency and disconnectedness that some refer to as the "Kenyon Bubble". Of course, a liberal arts education isn't about training for a career; it's about 'education for life'. While that certainly has merit, it also leads many faculty to have little regard or support for exploring careers and pursuing internships (though there are, of course, a few exceptions). When students see the respected faculty giving careers such little attention, it often becomes a lower priority for the students as well. For those students who haven't been independently proactive with regard to careers, many find themselves graduating without a clear sense of direction and/or without adequate internship preparation.
