Pros

Mostly great kids. The experience working with kids I earned there has been valuable for my development as an educator

Cons

So many, where do I begin? To start off, this company had ZERO staff of color in upper-management positions, TWO Site Coordinators who were people of color (including me!), and barely any staff of color who were group leaders and who worked directly with the students. This company never even acknowledged that this was an issue, and told their employees about a plan to address this problem. Kidsborough is a company that felt comfortable taking money from families of color, yet there was barely any racial representation. This was something that bothered me as a person of color because I understand the importance of students of color having an educator who looks like them, yet Kidsborough either didn't get this or care much for it, I am thinking the latter. I also never felt comfortable at the job because I was a person of color. There was no kind of affinty support group for staff of color. This program just care about taking money. This program is glorified babysitting. They try to sell themselves as a after-school enrichment program, however the curriculums they have tried to create were poorly written and written by unlicensed educator. Parents pay a lot for this program, yet all their kids do is play outside or make cheap arts and crafts from stores like Oriential Trading or Walmart. As a licensed teacher, I understand the importance of kids socializing with one another, however you shouldn't need to shell out hundreds of dollars for a program like this. You are better off having playdates and finding a neighbor to watch your kids.

Pros

They pay well for the field. Kids and ground-level staff are generally a pleasure to work with.

Cons

Consistently understaffed and undertrained because administration actively resists paying for quality training and retaining experienced staff. Making staff drive all over the state to compensate for staffing and training failures leads to incredibly high burnout and turnover. Constantly disorganized and slow to respond (if you even get a response!) because staffing failures means admins are doing group leader work instead of leading the company. All admins are inexperienced anywhere outside of Kidsborough, creating a pervasive myopic "that's how we've always done things" attitude that stifles growth and creativity. Profoundly demoralizing environment for those not in the "in crowd" with the owner and her selected yes-admins. Running child-care as a for-profit venture so the owner can enjoy her second house in Maine should make all the staff look askance at the times that the company has come down on them about wanting staff raises or program supplies. Truly the only way to succeed here is to be prepared to work with no support from administration and cover your own site.
