Pros

Exceptional talent across the studio. Many colleagues are skilled, committed, and genuinely passionate about the work. I worked with people I respect and learned a great deal from them professionally.

Cons

This review reflects my personal experience and observations during my time at Lighthouse Games. I find the environment to be highly stressful, largely due to how the top leadership oversight is experienced day to day. From my perspective, decision making feels heavily centralised, with senior staff frequently under pressure to anticipate and accommodate the preferences and demands from the top. From what I observe on a daily basis, this places significant strain on leads and managers, who spend a great deal of energy managing expectations rather than exercising independent judgement. There's an emphasis on “pushing for quality”, the veil over the toxicity - The way this is delivered feels more like an authoritarian directive than collaborative, and in that sense somewhat old fashioned. I experience an atmosphere where avoiding negative reactions is a priority, which contributes to ongoing stress and tension across teams. Over time, this makes the working environment feel less psychologically safe than I would expect in a creative studio. During my time here, a few senior staff members left unexpectedly, which reduced layers of communication and support. As a result, feedback at times feels abrupt and unfiltered, which I find unsettling and difficult to navigate. We are expected to work long hours, our time and actions are heavily monitored. In the wider context of the current instability in the games industry, I think that some people, under different circumstances might have chosen to leave. Overall, the tone of the studio, in my experience, is frequently shaped by the mood of the leadership dynamics, which at times overshadows the otherwise strong team and creative potential. This studio may suit individuals who are comfortable operating under close leadership oversight. Based on my personal experience, those who value autonomy, psychological safety, and collaborative decision making may find the environment challenging. This reflects only my own time at the company, others may have a different experience.

Terrible CEO, he wants you to be obsessed with your work, think about work outside of working hours and not have a healthy work-life balance

Pros

Great team members. Great compensation. Supportive direct line manager.

Cons

Sociopathic CEO. Archaic project structure. Lots of people followed Gav out of Playground yet regularly strive to emulate how things were done there. Jobs for mates is rare but does happen on occasion.
