Pros

As a Data Science & Operations Intern for Localwise, I was mostly responsible for data management and analysis. During my first four months, Localwise went through significant development in quantity of business applications and online traffic. I had to learn skills in data manipulation and statistical analyses to keep up with the growing online presence and inflow. I also had the opportunity to get involved in other aspects of the company. I helped build our social media identity by quantitatively analyzing social media campaigns and their impact of engagement. I also led a photo campaign, which enabled me to integrate more within UC Berkeley and the neighboring communities. Ben and Maya did an amazing job providing leadership opportunities for interns and helping us develop our skills. They also take a quantitative approach to building a marketplace, which really resonated with my mechanical engineering background. Localwise has a culture built around team, trust, rigorous quantitative analysis, and community. It’s a powerful combination that makes Localwise a great place to work.

Cons

Being involved in operations at an early-stage startup is an exciting, but it can also be a challenging position. I'll look for Localwise to solidify more and more of its operations as the company grows into a well-oiled machine.

Pros

As an intern at Localwise, I managed the Twitter page and executed other marketing tasks, including the whiteboard campaign featuring local owners/employees and Cal students. Because of the experience, I learned how to utilize social media management tools, practice photography and design, and become more comfortable talking to students and business owners alike. A great thing about startup culture is the ability to be in control of your own projects: if you have an interesting or creative idea, Ben and Maya are very enthusiastic about incorporating it into how Localwise runs. You get to execute it from start to finish, and the process makes you feel really valued as a member of the Localwise team. One aspect I wasn't used to as an intern elsewhere was the open communication with your bosses. 1 on 1 meetings felt more like peer discussions rather than me + scary manager. My favorite part about working at Localwise was learning about all the local businesses in the East Bay. Although I've been a student in Berkeley for two years already, it wasn't until I was an intern that I realized how little I had been exploring the local community and all it had to offer. It was fun to stay on top of new business/restaurant openings and what local festivals were happening this weekend. Another cool thing about my experience was seeing and being a part of Localwise's evolution. There's been so much growth since I first started, and I can't wait to see more.

Cons

Although there's some collaboration between interns, I didn't really get to know the rest of the team.
