Pros

Wide array of technologies, smart people, and decent collaboration among chemists, biochemists, and engineers. Most people will work on a variety of projects and technologies, so you won't get too bored with any one topic.

Cons

Most people are under appreciated, there are easily identifiable glass ceilings, pay rates are low for this region of the nation (based on ACS data). The company is very top heavy with management. Also, the company is an SBIR proposal mill, happy to live off of government contracts, with empty promises to push products to market with zero intention of actually doing so. At best, the company may consider licensing a product to another company or spinning off a company, but this has not happened in a long time. Additionally, overhead rates make it very difficult to apply enough man-hours and supplies into a project to build it to a stage where a product could actually go to market. Most all projects are managed by senior (PhD level) people with little management experience and occasionally poor social skills (they're smart people, but poor managers). Finally, not many opportunities for personal growth and other training here. Typically, only senior-level people are allowed to go to conferences.

Lynntech Response

As part of the HR leadership for Lynntech I am saddened by this review. Over the last 3 years, Lynntech has invested heavily in the creation of market driven salary ranges for all positions based on reliable and employer reported data. ACS data has been reviewed on several occasions and it has not been reliable when applied to geographic areas and individual job descriptions. Further, the company has invested in structured career paths to eliminate any glass ceilings and have encouraged employee input at all levels of the organization. We welcome any employee or job candidate to visit with HR personnel about our pay grades and compensation strategy. Most disturbing to HR is the statement, “with empty promises to push products to market with zero intention of actually doing so.” Our executive team has spent countless hours and effort in aligning our company with the resources needed to excel in reaching the goal of commercializing new products. Over a dozen team meetings were held, and continue to be held with new employees, concerning the company strategies for the realization of these efforts. The company is closer to the goal than ever before in several areas. Lynntech is a small company performing cutting edge research and as such expects technical leaders to be involved in people leadership while also providing professional, service oriented human resource, accounting, IT, and program management resources. All executive and HR personnel have an open door policy and encourage all staff to utilize this when they have questions or concerns. Research and development of new ideas and concepts is not for everyone, but our diverse team of scientists and engineers are always seeking new individuals to work with in a robust environment of successful SBIR programs.

Pros

Plenty of opportunities to branch out and work on a variety of projects. Able to chat directly with anyone in the company regardless of your position.

Cons

Reliant on SBIR contracts for majority of funding. Proved difficult when SBIR re-authorization was delayed.

Pros

Good experience for a first time job- lots of small tasks to see if you enjoy the work to do it later in your career

Cons

- The experience you get is very shallow and not enough to feel like you have any experience in it - Compensation does not match work expected to be done - Several individuals experienced harassment from a coworker and were told by HR that nothing could be done because "it happened so long ago" (2 months had passed). When things were finally being addressed weeks later it was suggested and, written in an email from HR, for them to put themselves in a situation with the individual that might cause another incident to allow more recent evidence of harassment - I was part of a major layoff due to government funding recently and management made a tacky joke about one of the individuals that was laid off one hour after it happened - There are 3 cliques in Engineering with one being notorious for racism and misogyny- in the past year these individuals received the most raises and promotions despite others being just as qualified yet being passed over. This company is very much "it's who you know not what you know" as the manager involved in that clique has a higher social standing than the other managers
