Pros

MIT is definitely an amazing organization, but the pay is abysmal. The benefits package was decent, free T passes which was nice as they don't offer paid parking.

Cons

The pay is abysmal. During my interview process, I read a review that said that the MIT pay is "laughable". When I received my offer letter, I literally laughed. I negotiated to a slightly higher salary and figured that I would take it as this job "looks good on a resume". The people look at you as an outsider and I never felt comfortable there. The department that I worked in was very inadequately staffed and the job duties were not divided well, so I wound up doing the majority of the work while my coworkers went to lunch. I specifically asked about growth opportunities within the company during my interview process, and I soon found out that there are no growth or promotion opportunities.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
