Pros

Most people get paid on time. Schools are in cheap locations. Canmove up quickly if they like you.

Cons

Pay is lower than at most international schools while hours are much longer. Running a club is required outside teaching time. There is no housing allowance. Schools are far from city centers so unless you have Mandarin fluency life is hard. Advancement seems to favor cute, perky girls or jocks. A boys club that no woman has ever gotten into. If you dont get drunk with the boys you wont move up. There have been three superintendents in the last three years. The current superintendent was promoted after less than two years with the company and has admitted to barely knowing the curriculum, which every one knows is a rip off of British Columbia's but everyone just pretends not to notice. Students are bottom of the barrel and most speak zero English but if they have money they are pushed in. You get pressured to pass them even if they dont deserve to. Getting smaller every year. Many teachers fired because of shrinkage.Science teachers need not apply. They only hire former graduates who have been promised jobs. More a business than a school focused on education quality. Dont even consider this hot mess.

Pros

Lots of resources Students are wonderful Administration is nice, but powerless (discussed in the cons)

Cons

FIRST, MAY I BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR FOR THOSE OF YOU CONSIDERING THIS JOB FOR EMPLOYMENT: 1) accommodation IS NOT provided for certified BC teachers, only for ESL teachers 2) The school is cheap cheap cheap cheap to no end cheap! 3) Mould is an issue, it might be in your classroom, in your office, behind your whiteboard 4) classrooms are ill equipped at best; sometimes projectors or speakers don't work, and it is a hassle to get anything replaced There is a reason that most of the staff at this school are new. Maple Leaf is a stepping stone, not a career, its a two years and then flee with all it's resources. Some of your fellow staff members are not professionals, some are upset, one threw himself from a building (or so some say...) etc etc etc. If you like giving out tests, then this is the school for you. If you like marking until you have blisters on your left and right hands, then this is the school for you. This school will overload you with work, and then ask for more. The school has recently increased the rent for teachers who are living on campus. The rent was increased by 50%, but then the teachers revolted. Now the school has argued that they won't increase the rent until next year.... but most international schools pay for a teacher's rent, or subsidize it in your salary.... May I say this again: there are 125 job postings on education Canada for this job every single year, why is that? This school has proven to be a huge disappointment, and I will be more than happy to flee with my two years experience and get out. This school is a joke, at best. Get your two years, and run.
