Pros

Organisation does impactful, meaningful work; Culture is excellent because the people who work here are passionate about their work; The building itself is an amazing place to work - great facilities, beautiful views, gorgeous surrounding areas for walks (rinville, coast walk); Huge commitment to sustainability - you can tell just from the rubbish bins in the canteen! Volunteer-led sustainability team do amazing work. Lots of little clubs and activities in the Organisation. Corporate Services (Finance, HR etc.) very approachable (despite some major strategy flaws) Some people are offered a long term contract or a permanent job (rare but if you get one of these, you're safe from the main drawbacks of this organisation)

Cons

A lot staff on short term internal contracts or are long term external contractors. Offering permanent contracts isn't always possible, but the communication on short term contracts is atrocious and there's no excuse for that. Hearing stories of colleagues being on probation again and again when brought back under new contracts for a 'new jobs' (same work) is disheartening. HR are friendly and offer great service in some areas, but no matter what you do, you just can't make up for lack of proper communication on contracts. You can't say you're genuinely committed to wellbeing if you're sending people home on a Friday not knowing if they're coming back on a Monday (common story). And no, the fact that people still want to work for the Marine institute isn't proof that these things are done well. It's proof that Marine Science is their life's work and they're passionate about it.
