Pros
- Lots of autonomy in your role. You'll have things you're accountable for, but as a startup, there's no shortage of problems to work on and figure out beyond your job description. If you're someone who can pull yourself out of the weeds and find a better way to do something, it will get noticed and rewarded. You have a chance to make a big impact here. - Good people get recognized and promoted. While I was at MarketMuse, I and several of my coworkers had a chance to move into new roles and even new departments. It's still a small company, so good performance gets noticed. - Genuinely kind and smart people. MarketMuse has attracted a strong collection of people who are great at what they do. There's a pretty open culture where you can be honest about what's working and what's not, and people want to find ways to ensure strong working relationships. - The best product in its market. I had a chance to actually try several competitive products. MarketMuse generally beats them out for most use cases. - A great place to learn a ton about SEO and content strategy. I came to MarketMuse thinking I knew a fair bit about these fields. Once I was there, I learned more about them in my first few months than I did in my entire career prior. You will learn a ton from some of the best in the business.
Cons
Not really a con, but the level of autonomy is not going to be for everyone. If you need someone to break projects and problems into clear cut daily tasks for you, and need someone to stay on you to get things done, you will likely struggle here. Your coworkers will always be willing to help, but no one is going to be a babysitter. You will be trusted to own your stuff and execute your way, but you have to earn that trust. - Divided attention sometimes led to divided results. Every team was very ambitious, and that sometimes led to everyone trying to do too much at once. This would lead to projects being half-done or abandoned. - Project ownership could be unclear. Working cross-functionally and with other people on my team was very often rewarding, but occasionally there would be projects that multiple people were working on, yet no one owned. This could lead to frustration. Project management could be a bit uneven, though by the end of my time here, things were much better on this front. - Problem clients were sometimes allowed to stay problem clients. From the product and engineering team to the client-side teams, MarketMuse is full of passionate, talented people who will do anything to make their clients successful. That attitude has helped MarketMuse build and maintain long-lasting relationships with some wonderful clients. But there were a few bad apples who got the white glove treatment at the expense of other projects and people's sanity. I think this could be a con for almost any SaaS company, but for how small our team was, even one rough client could significantly impact things.
Pros
When reflecting on the strengths of MarketMuse, four core aspects stand out: innovation, transparency, autonomy and collaboration. Innovation: Not only is the technology cutting-edge, but what makes this start-up so special are the people behind it. Each department is robust in the sense of expertise, experience and willingness to provide learning opportunities for teammates. We work hard as a collective group to push product led growth initiatives forward. Transparency: I have noticed an increased effort from the MarketMuse leadership team to be honest and open about all aspects of the company including finances, fundraising goals, departmental issues/needs and more. There are consistent company wide emails and meetings to keep individuals informed and up-to-date on news. Autonomy: There is a mutual respect, trust and understanding amongst teammates. Establishing clear expectations and communication with the individuals you work closely is the key to success. Utilize one-on-one time with your manger to keep them aware of work related and personal successes and struggles. Collaboration: At MarketMuse we lean on and support each-other, no matter what department you are in. The cross team collaboration is strong and is what keeps the company going forward. Teammates are willing to go the extra mile to help with solving problems, implementing initiatives and ensuring you are on the right path to reach your long term career goals.
Cons
My experience at MarketMuse has not had any outstanding cons. Every role will encounter struggles, but it helps to know there is a team that will have your back in these moments.
