Pros

Average Hourly pay, with plenty of opportunities for overtime in most markets. Can make manager with no college requirements. Relocation available in all markets. Holiday pay for full time employees, vacation, Instant Profit Sharing based on annual pretax income, which can increase yearly in a snow ball effect. 401k offered as well as insurance and dental. Great people to work with. Very customer "guest" focused. Huge selection of products to sell. No longer utilizes individual employee contract agreements. Head of Operations is a man with years of in store GM experience and connects well with the needs of store level employees. I enjoy his leadership more then previous Heads.

Cons

Hundreds of policy and procedures to know, many of which can be vague and ambiguous and open to GM interpretation. Odd management hours for department managers along with working every other weekend. Every weekend if you are part time. It takes 10 years of full time employment to hit max 4 weeks of vacation. Hamstrung on where you can buy certain building materials goods, making competition difficult against more agile competitors. Once heard an HR upper manager state "Menards does not care about your family life" in regards to relocation to save a marriage. Constant turn over in part time employees makes retention and continuity hard in departments. Overwhelming amount of reports. Micromanagement is the norm. No 401k matching. Insurance is expensive even with company contribution. Commercial/Contractor sales is the bane of the owners existence and is watched under microscope from WI. Threatens financial recourse if you quit to work for a competitor within 24 months and so many miles.
