Pros
Job satisfaction has always been the carrot for me. Knowing that your work directly impacts the lives of many people in the city gives me tremendous pride. When I first started working for Transit, the equipment was old, the infrastructure was dangerously dated, the public was hurting, city life was showng all the classic tell-tell signs of bad mobility/transportation issues. The changes that have taken place at NYC Transit have been short of miraculous. Not only has the focus changed to keep NYC moving but the mission of the entire organization has been chrystalized down to many levels of the company. Much is expected of NYC Transit and much has been delivered. It's a big organization with a big mission. Yes- working at NYCT can be frustrating at times but the pluses far outweigh the negatives. Having the view from the inside and seeing how Transit operates to keep those trains and buses moving is truly a wonderful experience that many of our customers may not fully understand. I love to see a train arriving, I love to see those buses moving - I love to see how we are addressing the needs of our senior citizens - I love to see the bloodline of the city in perpetual Transit. That is just one of the best reasons to work for NYC Transit.
Cons
Transit operates a 7day/24 hour operation that takes a toll on it's employees. Many of our workers have work schedules that are quite demanding and their lives are challenged by changing service demands and new Transit service initiatives. Transit systems are not energized without the soul of it's employees taking a toll. It seems to me, that many of our employees, once retired from the company, do not enjoy long, extended periods of retirement years.
