Pros

- If you love politics and don’t want to move to DC, working for the MN legislature is your best bet - Flex scheduling during the summer months - Comp time for the extra hours you work during session (con: you start accruing at 85 hours bi weekly, not immediately after the standard 80) - Low cost health and dental. 401k style retirement benefits - Politically minded people all around you who share a strong common interest

Cons

- If you are applying for a legislative staff job, do not get matched with a psychotic legislator. There’s a few of them that are known to make their staff person’s life very very difficult. - Promotion potential and significant pay increases are really only available to staff in the majority party - Work can be stressful during the legislative session with time constraints and long hours - High turnover to better paying and more stable jobs

Pros

Co-workers are amazing. My senator was very informative and very helpful. Support staff including IT and fiscal services were always willing to help out. Very welcoming.

Cons

Some staffers could be threatened and take it out on new people. The wage was minimal, but the benefits helped. Overall, not a lot of negative aspects.
