Interns are included in toolbox meetings: This gives us a more in-depth view of how roles are assigned, how certain problems are discussed and solved. We get to hear our superiors share important ideas with each other. We are even given the task to present our previous day's job updates and discuss what difficulties we came across and how it was overcome. Interns are involved in the field work: We witness first hand the job to be performed. From communicating with the client, to troubleshooting the problem, to coming back the next day with the solution/parts replacement/equipment for testing.

If this is important for you, ( which for me it isn't) they don't give out allowances or salaries.
