Cons

Money-Media is made up of several niche publications that cover incredibly niche topics in very limited ways. Lots of people at MM - particularly editors - only know this kind of journalism. Reporters work primarily with PR reps and heavily-coached sources. Ultimately, these publications appear designed to support the industry and provide appropriate content. While the topics may be interesting to some, the audience for most MM publications is marketing and sales people. Stories tend to be written and reported in a very uniform way with one purpose - to help these guys make money. That drives all coverage. MM isn't concerned about digging deep, holding the powerful accountable or anything like that. Everything is data driven. Story quotas are strictly enforced. Clicks and forwards are key measurements of success at the expense of other evaluation methods. As a result, many people there are cynical and frustrated and regret not having pursued more meaningful journalism careers. Consequently, it's not as passionate or curious a place as you would expect for a newsroom, which can be disappointing - particularly for new reporters. For all those who are just starting out, know that there's something more fulfilling out there for you.
