Amazing mission, tough work - Instructional Aide II Morgan Autism Center Employee Review

Pros

I laugh every day, whether it's with students or staff. Classroom team has a close bond, but may take time to break into the social group. People are very friendly, and school culture is very positive. Lots of breaks during the year. Offers full medical/dental for you, but not family.

Cons

Quality of the lead teacher (in terms of supervision of your work, leadership ability, affect) varies wildly from room to room. It's essentially luck of the draw where you get placed. Pay is difficult to survive on unless you have a second job. You will be injured by a student eventually, it is just a matter of how severe it is. Not a meaningful amount of training, you learn by doing. It will feel extremely disorganized for the first few months until you get a handle of the schedules and the individual needs of the students.

Pros

Good people: everyone I met has been both polite and kind. Really, you have to be to work with autistic people. My supervisors and co-workers listen to what I say and acknowledge me. I noticed that during the interview, that they were very honest and open, and I really appreciate that! It makes me feel secure that if I have a problem I can openly bring it to them and they'll listen.

Cons

This can be hard, stressful work. The students and clients have autism, some of them have it severely. It is upon the employee to learn how to deal with them while still being humane, compassionate, and gentle even when the students and clients are unable to respond in kind, due to their disabilities. There are a lot of employees at this school, around 80, I think. Many of them have been there for many years. There seems to be potential to stay there a long time, but only if you like the work of caring for disabled people. It's not a huge company with big offices and a chance to move up a corporate ladder--it's a school/day care. Most of the employees work in the rooms with the students and clients, and that's where it ends.
