Pros
I started working at Moving Colour right out of art school and felt it was a very positive experience overall. As a small commercial studio Moving Colour gets new projects every few months and I found this type of work culture personally exciting as it allowed me put new skills to use and hone my abilities as an animator. The manager and owner Brian was a fantastic director. Very kind, easy to talk to, resourceful, and respectful to every artist under his employ. He made his expectations for assignments very clear and worked as hard as any of the freelancers to get projects up and running even when clients gave us criminally short schedules. I would often be the last to leave the studio and Brian would still be at his desk working on a shot. Which brings me to the very positive work culture; it often felt like we were all working hard to accomplish a mission together. Sure there were some late nights but dinner was always payed for and management was sticking it out with the freelancers as well. There was a strong sense of unity in trying to meet deadlines as a team. Since there were many freelancers coming in and out of the studio for various tasks Brian did a great job of making company outings a fun way to help the team to get to know one another. Brian even went further by setting up life drawing classes (which he payed for) to help foster the talent at the studio. The commercial animation world is a lot different than film and television; in my experience it is a lot less corporate and very "shoestring." As the type of person who enjoys the thrill of meeting challenging deadlines and having the freedom to try out new techniques I found Moving Colour a great place to cut your teeth. Looking forward to working with Moving Colour again.
Cons
-Commercial studio means job security isn't always reliable. -Pay is not as competitive as bigger commercial houses (however I got the impression this came more from a culture of big clients underbidding animation projects as they tend to do at most small studios) Also Brian is very open about discussing and negotiating rates. Everything was above board. -The studio space itself is quite comfortable but the building it is in is a little sketchy.
