Pros
I was in the middle of one career seeking employment in the technology field and one day I get a call from one of their Recruiters. Apparently, they saw my resume on one of the job boards and labeled me as a potential candidate for their program. I passed their pre-screening and they wanted to enroll me in their training program. I was a bit apprehensive at first, however, after being with the company for over a year, I am completely satisfied. This is one of the most valuable opportunities that has come my way. Training: ...was a rigorous 10 weeks, through which I was exposed to the entire J2EE development process and many of the major frameworks that companies are using currently. I immediately experienced not only my confidence boost in managing the potential responsibilities that I would soon have, but also my comprehension of Java overall. They teach much more that what many college decrees offer as far as applicability of the courses you take. Time-off: The company has a standard policy of two-weeks vacation, which as a subcontractor, is great since you don't get paid if you don't work. Work-life Balance: During training, the skill is tipped heavily on the work-side of the scale, but you are trading 10 weeks for the rest of your life, which in my opinion is worth it. Afterwards, you have a typical schedule of 40-hour weeks leaving you plenty of time to catch a game on TV or enjoy some other hobby. Compensation: Definitely a plus. In addition, if you complete certain certifications within their specified timeframe you get an immediate raise on your next year's salary. This is a huge win for me, since I'm competitive with myself and this gives me a chance to earn some extra money while earning an industry-approved credential. For re-location, there is a good supplement as well.
Cons
Challenges: I see the same challenges here that other companies that subcontract their workers see. Not much support as far as interacting with the community or getting acclimated to the area. You're pretty much on your own as far as finding the best places to eat, but I think the internet has you covered there...
