Pros

Salary growth is almost guaranteed, and not at all dependent on competence. Those who put in the years with the institute will make high salaries. The mission and goal of the institute is unbeatable, and employees are well respected by all outside of NIH.

Cons

Advancement reduced to government determined GSA rates. Management positions filled by years experience as opposed to competence, so management is not often not the best person for the job. High employee turnover for competent employees while the opposite is true for incompetent employees leads to a brain drain.

Pros

Working with the some of the smartest scientists and clinicians in the world. So many learning opportunities. Kind patients. Allowed time to care for patients as there is no pressure of quotas by health insurance.

Cons

Nursing management can be verbally abusive with frequent retaliation and intimidation. As most older nurses have worked there for most of their career, they are dismissive of new perspectives and resistant to evidence-based practice.
