Resource-full but lots of red tape - Predoctoral Fellow NIH Employee Review

Pros

This is a huge community of scientists with tons of resources, from the headquarters of PubMed on site to great equipment and support staff for all your experimental needs. It's well known worldwide and the name alone commands respect. Funding for intramural research can be generous, and PIs do not have to write grants.

Cons

There are so many legal and administrative hurdles to working for a government research lab that they often outweigh the pros. Rules on IT use, travel, even what gifts you can give other employees are all very strict but hard to fully understand. Even simple purchases have to go through at least 3 administrators to be approved.

Pros

Working with the some of the smartest scientists and clinicians in the world. So many learning opportunities. Kind patients. Allowed time to care for patients as there is no pressure of quotas by health insurance.

Cons

Nursing management can be verbally abusive with frequent retaliation and intimidation. As most older nurses have worked there for most of their career, they are dismissive of new perspectives and resistant to evidence-based practice.
