Pros

Honestly, the best part of the job is the people you work with. You're surrounded by a brilliant team on the frontline, and getting to genuinely help young people (directly or indirectly) is the reason you do the work. That part of it is fantastic

Cons

The organisation feels like it's really struggling, and that pressure lands on the frontline staff. People are stretched thin, and it's easy to feel overworked and overwhelmed. It feels very top-heavy at the moment - a lot of senior managers, and overlap in some of their roles. Micromanagement has rapidly increased, and there's a huge focus on hitting numbers and targets. Sometimes it feels like that gets in the way of providing a quality service. It can leave you feeling really deskilled and scared to make any mistakes. When new ideas don't work out, it feels like it just gets brushed under the carpet. There isn't much accountability, so the same mistakes can happen repeatedly. There is limited flexibility in some roles, so your work-life balance can take a real hit. You shouldn't expect much in the way of pay raises; progression is really slow. No clinical supervision provided to staff in frontline roles. A lot of really good people have left lately, staff turnover is noticeably high.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I’m really pleased to hear that you valued our work with young people and had a positive experience with your colleagues—that’s so important to us. I also appreciate your honesty about the challenges you faced, particularly around workload and flexibility. You're right that we place a strong emphasis on being there for as many children as possible, while also striving to maintain a high-quality service. It’s disappointing to hear that you felt deskilled at times, and I’d really welcome the opportunity to explore this further with you. If you're open to it, I’d welcome hearing more about your experience and any ideas you have for improving the support we offer to frontline practitioners. Please feel free to contact me at sfriel@nspcc.org.uk, and we can arrange a time to talk. Thanks again, Shaun
