Pros

Good to work from home

Cons

While working at NationsBenefits I was diagnosed with stage four cancer. I underwent radiation but continued working and only took days off when I needed to. NationsBenefits had recently bought my original company, and after this acquisition we started hiring new team members. While still training new hires, I got a call after work saying I was being laid off. I told them that I believed my job was protected under my state’s laws (due to just finishing cancer treatment), but they told me that these laws did not protect me from being laid off due to the company “downsizing”. I was the only person on my team laid off and like I said, we had multiple brand new hires, so it seemed to me that the stated reason didn’t match what was really happening. I was left in a difficult job market with a terminal disability. This experience profoundly changed my perspective on the company and how they prioritize their employees. Given my experience, I decided to share my story so others have more context when considering their own professional choices.
