DON'T BELIEVE THE PROPAGANDA! Terrible culture. Mountain of issues swept under the rug. - Software Engineer Neighborhoods.com Employee Review

Pros

* The values are a great goal (if only they were actually followed). * There are some really great, hard working people here. * Mindless work is easy to do. * Many social events (to try to pacify you). * The office looks nice. * Standard perks like coffee, snacks, beer. * It might be okay for someone just starting their career to get some basic skills.

Cons

* Transparency is terrible--everything happens behind closed doors with no input from every day people. Their idea of transparency is "We'll tell you the decision after we make it". * There is a clique of people that all came over from Gorilla. Suspiciously they are all "team leaders" and make all decisions about the products. Ask about it! * It is not a startup. It is a corporation with a top down attitude I've never seen before. * They say you can work from home but that's not exactly true. People rarely work from home for fear of reprisals and constant "memos" that clarify you need a reason to work from home. Read the employee handbook. Talk to people that work there currently. * There is no coaching or action plans (even if you are a high performer). There are opportunities to give feedback but don't do it! If you disagree or give feedback, you are blindsided one day and just let go. * There is a mountain of tech debt that everyone just pushes around to each other. * There is no documentation and no ownership. It is extremely confusing and frustrating that even our own teams don't know how our products work. * Code quality is poor. It's very confusing and inefficient. Many of our own features are broken. Ask to see the admin panel and what that process is like. * There are no opportunities for advancement (unless you used to work at Gorilla). * Very poor project management. Meetings don't come with agendas, nor do people take notes, nor are there a list of actions items afterwards. (Take a look at people's calendars.) * Basic product road map is too much to ask. No basic long term plans. Dates and resources? Forget about it. * They will tell you everything you want to hear in the interview. Be skeptical and talk to other people that work there on LinkedIn or Facebook. Get the real story! * No annual raises or bonuses. Not even a basic performance evaluation. My bonus was $300.

Thank you for your candid feedback. We recognize that we aren’t perfect, but that doesn't mean we don't continually strive to get better. Most of our employees appreciate our company culture and environment - more structured than “start up” but not so boring and rigid that we’re “corporate.” I regret that you didn’t feel the same way during your time here. To help us improve as we grow, we will continue to collect employee feedback through weekly pulse surveys, 360 reviews, and regular manager/employee 1-on-1s. I appreciate you encouraging potential employees to ask important questions during their interview process. I think it is equally important that our future employees have the opportunity to interview us just as much as we are interviewing them. I’m happy to chat with any current employee or candidate about the direction and future of Neighborhoods.com. - Bill

Pros

Flex time off and flex hours, given that people work in different time zones. Remote company. Mid-level personnel are pleasant to work with. Compensation was at market rates even if they couldn't afford it.

Cons

Too many meetings of people talking just to hear their own voice. The company is performing very poorly - they don't spend strategically to make up for the lack of revenue. Culture is very awkward because there's no structure. Change is slow and often too little too late (they did not keep up with the real estate market tanking). Turnover is extremely high with people leaving on their own or management hiring and RIFing so quickly because they're confused on what positions they need in order to succeed. Leadership refuses to believe what you say and belittles you for bringing concerns up if, even if you're the one closest to the data so it's easy to shut down and stop trying.
