Demoralizing, no strategy, no leadership - Associate Editor NewBay Media Employee Review

Pros

Flexible work schedule, creative team members on the ground level

Cons

no respect shown for employees: no performance reviews, no response to employee complaints, incentive programs are not followed through on. no investment in brands-it seems the company is just milking every last dollar until the brands run dry. Media is handled like we're still in the booming 1990s. Executives do not understand the industries we serve, and won't listen to the long-term employees , the brand ambassadors, who DO. It's arrogance across the top levels of management. Women are treated as second-rate pseudo-intellectuals, especially in the technical sectors. Resources are slashed over and over again with no strategy for adapting to new models.

Pros

Tons of smart, creative people working in the trenches, who are smart and hardworking, very experienced, and are well-known and well-liked in their fields.

Cons

I truly enjoyed my actual job, but I had to get out of NewBay. Why? Senior Management had lack of a grasp of modern digital media business, and rather than try to strategize solutions to failing print revenues, they maintained the old, failing status quo while hacking away at resources, effectively killing the quality of long-respected brands. I did not want to go down with the ship... We all know media companies have had to get lean and mean, but many of these employees were juggling entire brands (print magazine/website/social media/special projects/supplements/book projects) on their own, with no support teams. And these same employees who were hanging by a thread, were often told that if they couldn't get the job done, they should be working nights and weekends. I've been employed at four publishing companies and not seen employees get worked so hard and their attempts to improve brands and products so utterly ignored. Discriminatory comments toward women were made by a few members of top management. It's all just too bad because these legacy brands were market leaders in their time.
