Pros

- There once were a lot of people who cared to get it right. - The community around Newark is amazing. - Global recognition.

Cons

- Management is actually useless and highly egotistical. - They haven't updated their processes in decades; even the ones that are flat out not working. - You will feel crippled by the incompetence you serve, rather than feel enabled by managers who enable their teams. - No growth. - Below market pay - They ask for (additional) weekend hours from positions that are typically M-F - They are actually going bankrupt, the only thing keeping them afloat is money the city gives them. But even that's not enough to keep it afloat for much longer. - They actually don't care about the city in which they do business and are elitist.

Pros

All departments are eager to help and are pretty synergetic when working with multiple departments. You'll get second hand experience for other fields of museum work just from working in whichever department you choose. Interns are not given busy body work and will actually contribute to on going projects and programs with the museum.

Cons

HR has room for improvement.

Pros

Don’t waste your time working here.

Cons

DO NOT WORK FOR THIS MUSEUM. First of all, no one there has half a brain enough to be in the positions they’ve found themselves in and that is their biggest problem. My biggest problem with them as a former employee, is that they will put you in dangerous situations, they will compromise your physical safety and health, they will lie to you and string you along for years about (false) plans for your future there just to keep you working for them, and they WILL NOT compensate you even close to fairly for it- For the truly backbreaking physical labor they have you do, the unsafe locations they send you to completely on your own, their inability to give you enough working hours to make a living so you have to work 2 part time jobs with no health insurance even though the museum job is compromising your physical safety and health... And what’s more, if you need them to prove you worked there ever in the future- they won’t do it. They used me like a tissue without any humanity, they compromised my livelihood, and I can’t even use this experience as a reference when applying to museum jobs. I reached out to all of my supervisors, none of whom responded, and was told by the “HR department“, that they wouldn’t be providing any proof that I was ever employed there. Don’t let these people use you.
