Pros

We actually asked our full-time staff what their favorite things about working with Newsela were and most of them said the people. Many people on our staff our former educators, so I we have a great group of caring, smart, interesting people. Other things on my favorite things about working here: - You get rewarded for your work. At many companies, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Not so at Newsela. You don't get promoted just by complaining about how much you work or working long hours for no reason. Newsela leadership chooses to value people who take ownership of the company, come up with good ideas and execute them in smart ways. - You get to go to school again. Newsela really values schools and learning, which is why they ask staff members to get out and visit schools so they can see how the product is actually used in classrooms. Furthermore, we're also encouraged to take classes to broaden our skill set. - Diversity. This might seem like a strange thing to note especially after reading the previous review but the office that I work in is in the Silicon Valley (which in case, you haven't heard isn't really the place to go for a heterogenous population) but our office is mostly composed of women of color. Furthermore, there are a lot of conversations in our office about racial, gender and socioeconomic equality — it's definitely not a subject we shy away from. - Fun (within reason). Newsela really values its employees, but it values schools more. We don't have a ping pong table in our office. We don't get free lunch. I think the company tries to toe the line of providing small luxuries like snacks or weekly happy hours to make employees feel valued but definitely steers clear of over the top excess because after all, we're still an education company. We value teachers and students -- not glamorous extras.

Cons

- Rapid growth. The company is growing fast so it is kind of in a pubescent stage where there are lot of uncomfortable changes going on. Anytime you're hiring a lot of people in a short period of time, I'm sure things can be like this. - Not a ton of perks. Working in Palo Alto, you hear about companies that give you giant hiring bonuses, free lunch, free chartered sailing in SF Bay, free gym membership, etc. Newsela doesn't have these sorts of things, but again, I understand why. There's a difference between a company making money off of corporations and an education company. - Pretty tight about stock.

Pros

Good colleagues. Have acquired companies and products that are actually quite good. The leadership is proving out to be better than expected to be honest. We seem to recently be doing better than many companies out there and certainly many in Edtech.

Cons

Would like to see the 401k match improved.

Pros

Work flexibility. Knowing you are helping students to understand what they are reading.

Cons

School-type cliques are tiresome. Little to no regard for long-time employees, many of whom were callously replaced with AI.
