Flexible Work Arrangements and Nice PTO, but Lack of Career Development and Growth - Test Engineer Nokia Employee Review

Pros

1) Generous Vacation Time, even when starting new. 2) Flexible Work Arrangements. 3) Work-from-home arrangements are available, depending on your position and tasks.

Cons

1) Lack of career growth, career development, and career mentorship opportunities. This can be very frustrating for early-career engineers (0 - 5 year range). For such a large company, Nokia needs to do a better job of retaining and developing its younger engineers. 2) Very slow processes and work pace. Excessive bureaucracy. This is partially due to the heavy dependency on the Finland Nokia office. A lot of technical information that's needed is in the Finland office. This can be quite time-consuming and frustrating at times, and cause unnecessary delays, due to the 8-hour time difference between Dallas, TX and Finland. This may be discouraging for engineers who are trying to build their careers and gain valuable work experience. 3) Unfortunately, there is no 401k match provided with the benefits. 4) Vacation time cannot be carried over to the next calendar year. It is a use-it-or-lose-it program. At times, this can force employees to take "unwanted vacations" just to not lose their PTO time.

Pros

Decent starting salary, good benefits, generous PTO

Cons

1% raises forever. Last promotion I got to Principal had no raise but a bump in bonus percentage. Now they are giving kids 8-12% raises and they have less than 5 yrs. Once you hit about 5 yrs you will get the 1% a yr and be pigeon holed into a specific job. Then good luck trying to change.
