I worked specifically in the Advancement division my entire time there. Now that I have moved on to a new, healthy workplace I can reflect on my time at NU in this division with brand new eyes. I pray to never experience such a toxic, non-advocating, "we'll just rush this one time but it wont happen again," gaslighting circus of a workplace that is Advancement. NU would say otherwise, but there is RARELY a thought-out, long term plan for anything - which is easily argued by the fact myself and many, many of my colleagues across the division worked on pop-quiz-style deadlines constantly. Now, keep in mind - I understand there will always be a sense of urgency and the need for flexibility when working with high level donors, but to keep that expectation as the normal threshold has only resulted in extreme burnout and a MASSIVE sense of being disrespected. I had replied to multiple HR calls for improvement, offering up genuine and respectful suggestions for improvement at least twice and received no response - not even acknowledgement of the email. Not to mention the higher ups rarely know the names of the folks they are badgering to do all their last minute work for them. Upper management will often reintroduce themselves as if it were the first time to staff members who have been in their role for years. It's embarrassing. If you are considering a role specifically within Advancement (that's not a high-level position, because clearly if you'll be able to be happy and do whatever you'd like with little to no consequences if that's the case), but would like to work at NU, SPRINT - don't run - to literally any other department. Advancement, I promise you, will continue to insert a stick into its own metaphorical bicycle wheel and blame the fall on the closest employee who they've forgotten the name of. Pay is certainly not market rate to boot. By leaving, I secured a 40k raise in my new position of a similar role.
